A patient in a mental health ward has died following an altercation with another patient, prompting an investigation.

The 39-year-old man died at Princess Alexandra Hospital’s psychiatric ward in Brisbane’s south about 11.20am on May 4.

Queensland Police confirmed the incident and said Corrective Services Investigation Unit officers are investigating the man’s “sudden death”.

According to the ABC, the man was attacked during an altercation two days before his death.

It is still being determined whether the man died as a direct result of the attack or whether the incident may have triggered an underlying medical condition.

“As this matter is currently the subject of an investigation by the state coroner, it would be inappropriate to provide specific details or further information at this time,” a Metro South Health spokesperson said.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the patient’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said he had spoken to Health Minister Tim Nicholls and assured the public a thorough investigation would be carried out.

“What will happen now is a full and thorough investigation,” he said.

“If there is a link, then there has to be some questions around those processes, and it is fit and proper that there is probity.

“There isn’t that link at this stage, but an investigation does need to occur.”
