Southeast Queensland is now on flood watch and residents are urged to remain vigilant.

Despite authorities downgrading ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred to a tropical low early on Saturday morning, locals have been warned not to be complacent — with serious flooding still a risk despite wind speeds slowing down.

The Gold Coast and Redlands areas sustained damage overnight.

Brisbane avoided the worst of the system, though about 35,000 are without power.

“Power outages means traffic signals are down in locations across Brisbane and we’re also receiving reports of debris and water over the road from flash flooding,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said on Saturday.

“The risk going forward hasn’t evaporated altogether.

“After the cyclone comes the rain, so we need to be vigilant for potential flooding.”

There have not been any fatalities reported as a result of the weather event, though a man remains missing in northern NSW.

The man was inside his 4WD when it was washed off Wild Cattle Creek Bridge off Old Coramba Rd at Megan into fast running water about 2.20pm on Friday.

He was able to get out of the car and “secure himself to a tree branch approximately 30m from the river bank”, NSW Police said.

Officers communicated with the man until about 3pm, when he was swept from the tree.

He was last seen going underneath the floodwaters.

“I can confirm that we’ve had no loss of life and we have no missing persons as a result of this flood event, which is frankly terrific at this stage”, a SES spokesperson said on Saturday.

With continued heavy rainfall, residents are urged to stay vigilant, avoid floodwaters, and remain informed about road closures and evacuation plans.
