A pedestrian has died when they were struck by a truck on Bell St in Coburg, Melbourne.

A female pedestrian has died when she was struck by a truck on a busy road in Melbourne’s north.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Bell St and Sydney Rd in Coburg about 12.40pm on Thursday.

Crews treated the woman at the scene, but she could not be saved.

Bell St is closed in both directions between Sydney Rd and Main St and is expected to remain so for a number of hours.

There are “significant” delays on Sydney Rd and throughout the surrounding area, according to the transport department.

Drivers have been told to use Moreland Rd to the south and Murray Rd and Gaffney St to the north as alternatives.

Major delays are also expected for bus routes 513, 527, 503, 534, 561 and 903.

Route 19 trams along Sydney Rd are also delayed.
