“People were reporting they could hear someone screaming out for help upstairs,” a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said.
Entry to the second-floor room could only be accessed through a small laneway staircase, making for a difficult rescue.
Firefighters broke through the bottom half of a door and crawled into a room strewn with materials, where the fire was at that stage well-developed.
“The person was at the far end of that room,” the FRNSW spokesperson said.
Firefighters quickly brought the victim back through the door before NSW Ambulance paramedics began CPR efforts.
The man was transported to the Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition and died a short time later.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Firefighters remain at the scene to battle the blaze and investigate its cause.
