A notorious former local Sydney politician has walked free from prison on Friday.
Former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer was released from John Morony Correctional Centre in Sydney’s west after nearly five years behind bars for domestic violence and fraud offences.
The disgraced ex-politician was locked up in 2020 after, on separate occasions, he repeatedly punched a woman, shattered her phone, and put his hand over her mouth so she passed out.

The now 39-year-old also committed fraud by trying to use false documents to regain $6530 seized by police from his home.
It is understood that he is under strict bail conditions.
Mehajer came to public prominence after his lavish 2015 wedding to Aysha Learmonth in Western Sydney.
The nuptials reportedly cost $1 million and involved fleets of luxury cars, doves, helicopters, street closures in Lidcombe and exclusive magazine deals.
His recent stint behind bars was not his first experience with the justice system — Mehajer previously served 11 months in Cooma Correctional Centre after he was found guilty of electoral fraud in 2018.
At the time of the release almost seven years ago, he was also defending charges that he staged a crash in 2017 just before he was due in court over charges he had assaulted a taxi driver.
He walked free in a blue suit and tie at the time of his 2018 release from jail.
But on Friday, he did not face the media and, instead, swiftly left the facility in a hired black sedan.
