A five-year-old girl remains in a critical condition after being found unresponsive in a car on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a home in Tanilba Bay, the Port Stephens area, at about 4.30 pm after the girl was found inside a car parked in the driveway of her family's home.

She was airlifted to John Hunter hospital in a critical condition.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The temperature in Tanilba Bay on Tuesday reached a top of 37.5 degrees just before 3 pm.

It is not known how long the girl had been in the car for.

Police have not laid any charges over the incident.
