Critical incident declared as motorbike rider dies during police pursuit at Charlestown

The man, believed to be in his 20s, has yet to be formally identified.

A young motorbike rider has died while being chased by police on the state’s Central Coast.

Police said they attempted to stop a motorbike with no number plate on King St in Hamilton, Newcastle, about 7.30pm, pm Saturday.

When the rider did not stop, police gave chase down the Pacific Hwy at Charlestown, where the man, believed to be aged in his 20s, fell off his bike.

He was treated by paramedics for critical injuries but died at the scene.

He has yet to be formally identified, police said.

A crime scene and critical incident was declared to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
