A family has been lucky to escape serious injury after a rock was allegedly hurled at their car while driving in the Adelaide Hills.

A woman, her husband and their four children were left shaken and upset after the attack.

The family was driving home from school about 6pm on Wednesday, travelling along Gorge Road at Paracombe, when an unknown assailant reportedly hurled a rock at the car window.

The impact shattered the windscreen, leaving the mother with shrapnel wounds to her hands and arms.

The family says they saw a man hiding in the bushes next to the road before the attack.

Police say a person in a blue shirt was seen fleeing from the scene.

The suspect has not yet been located.
