Police allege the car was stolen from a home on Starboard Dr in Doreen on Tuesday morning.
A grandmother, her son and five children were sleeping inside the home at the time, unaware their house had been targeted.
Victim Nathan Lister said the intruders took the car keys from a table near the front door of the home.
“They’ve just walked in, straight in and ... grabbed the keys and (went) straight back out, left the door open and gone,” he said.
“My 12-year-old daughter is asleep ... and they’ve had to walk past (her) door, it’s so brazen.”
Lister said the outcome for his family could have been much worse.
“It’s lucky the keys were at the front door, because you just don’t know what could have happened,” he said.
“It’s a horrific end to a little bit of fun.”
The stolen Haval was allegedly spotted speeding by police in Whittlesea and South Morang just prior to the crash.
It was tracked by the Air Wing, with stop sticks successfully deployed to stop the car.
The youths however continued on driving for seven minutes before they crashed.
All six teenagers remain in hospital under police guard.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any CCTV/dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
