Brisbane has been named one of worst cities in Australia for patients to access a bulk billing GP.
The latest report from healthcare directory Cleanbill shows patients in 72.8 percent of suburbs in the Queensland capital are paying full price for medical care, often well above the national average out-of-pocket cost of $43.33.

A standard GP visit in Windsor averages at $60.48, the most expensive in Brisbane.
Ashgrove comes in at $58.65, followed by Fortitude Valley at $52.15, and Clayfield at $51.90.
Just 25 minutes away, the price drops significantly.
Compared to the national average, patients in Forest Lake pay about half the price per visit of $24.52. Acacia Ridge, Browns Plains, and Gatton are also well below the average, at $24.65, $26.79 and $29.05, respectively.
“When those clinics are located in suburbs that are more inner city, often the rent, the cost of labour, things like that, can be higher,” said Cleanbill founder and chief executive James Gillespie.
“And that can drive higher out-of-pocket costs.”
The cost gap is hitting many Brisbane families hard.
“I have so many bills all the time, it’s like swatting mosquitoes,” one Windsor local told 7NEWS.
“That’s why some of them are not going to the doctors,” another patient said in Inala.
“If they’ve got to pay $60 or $80 or $100.”
Cleanbill’s report also showed that one in four GP clinics do not have a website.
Of the ones that do, only 40 per cent publish their prices.
This makes it difficult for patients to compare costs and find affordable care.
“That lack of transparency can trap patients into paying more simply because they don’t know there are cheaper options nearby,” Gillespie explained.
From November 1, most adults will be eligible for bulk billing under new federal changes.
But until then, Gillespie said a short drive could save patients hundreds of dollars a year.
“It’s one of the clearest examples of how where you live can shape your access to basic healthcare,” he said.
