Two young girls and a woman were injured in a house fire on Terrigal St in Chadstone, in Melbourne’s southeast, about 9.40pm on Wednesday.

The primary school-aged girls and a 37-year-old woman were pulled unconscious from the home after a gas cylinder exploded and sparked a fire.

The girls were rushed to The Royal Children’s Hospital while the woman was taken to The Alfred Hospital.

“They were unconscious, so they were carried out and taken out to the front where Ambulance Victoria paramedics and firefighters were waiting,” Fire Rescue Victoria Commander Paul Eckholdt said.

“They did have some burns and they also had some airway burns as well.”

The girls have since stabilised and are expected to recover, while the woman’s condition remains critical.

Victoria Police are treating the fire as suspicious and are speaking with a 36-year-old man who also lives at the home.

Officers spoke to the male resident on Thursday morning, Murray said.

The man was not at the home when emergency services arrived on Wednesday.
