State MP Georgie Purcell has announced she and her partner, Federal MP Josh Burns, are expecting a baby girl.
Purcell shared the happy news on her Instagram on Sunday with photos from the ultrasound.
“Josh and I are expecting a baby girl early next year. It’s a big moment for us and I am so excited,” she wrote.

Purcell is an Animal Justice Party member and sits in the Legislative Council representing Northern Victoria, and Burns is a Labor Party member for the Melbourne seat of Macnamara.
In the post, Purcell acknowledged that their situation — two members from two different parliaments having a baby — was “a bit unique”.
“While we are indeed in public life, pregnancy is an incredibly personal experience,” she added.
“So I ask that we are granted respect and privacy just like anybody else (but I do look forward to sharing the parts with you that we are willing to share).”
While the MPs may sit on opposite ends of the political spectrum, they have stood together through all of the challenges they have faced, so far, as a couple.
“If you’ve followed my work for a while, you’ll know this isn’t my first pregnancy,” Purcell shared on Instagram.
“But it is the first time I’ve chosen to continue. I carry with me the stories of my abortion.”
Purcell revealed that due to her autoimmune disease, she was receiving weekly medical checks as her pregnancy was deemed high-risk.
“It means I am navigating pregnancy and a chronic illness,” she explained.
But despite the journey ahead, Purcell declared she would be running for re-election in the 2026 state election.
She plans to work as long as possible to continue to advocate for the issues she cares about, including abortion rights, animal welfare and the environment.
Burns was re-elected for his third term in his seat during the federal election in May.
Already a father to a girl, who he shares with his ex-wife, Burns is looking forward to adding to his family.
“Our little baby already has the most excited and loving big sister in Tia. And she’ll have a home full of animals, love, and fun,” wrote.
“Next year, my team and I will keep working hard for the community we love, but I also plan on being a present and involved dad every step of the way.
“I’m over the moon excited and can’t wait for this next chapter with my beautiful partner, Georgie, who I love with all my heart.”
