An Australian woman has made history after becoming an instant millionaire in the USA Power Lotto.

After entering the draw through Australia’s Lottery Office, the 29-year-old Brisbane woman has taken home the biggest individual win in the organisation’s history.

“While the woman will take home $1.89 million after taxes from her division two win in Thursday’s draw, the agonising reality is she was only one number from winning the entire $2.1 billion jackpot on offer,” The Lottery Office said in a statement.

The win was part of the USA Power Lotto’s run, which has now reached a whooping $2.6 billion.

The winner said she would use the money to pay off her debts, buy a home and travel — describing the win as “life-changing”.

“Are you serious? Oh my God,” she said when she got the call.

“I’m floating. You are joking. I was literally, today, just ranting about how I will never be able to buy myself a house or anything.”

The Sunshine State woman, who purchased three tickets in Thursday’s draw and chose to add the “multiplier” option, correctly chose the main numbers in the USA Power Lotto of 3, 16, 29, 61, and 69 but chose 23 as the Power number.

Had she chosen a Power number of 22 she would have won the jackpot outright.

The woman said she would use the winnings to travel the Western Australian coast in a caravan.

She also plans to enjoy a Mediterranean summer and visit the Cooke Islands and Bora Bora.

“It’s literally completely changed my life. I’m going to be debt free. I’m going to pay off my HECS debt and buy a home, and I will not have any debt and that has changed absolutely everything,” she said.

When asked if she had any advice for others, she said you have to “be in it to win it”.

“That’s literally why I buy tickets, I just sit there and think about all the things I would want to do with the money, and then I’m like, you’ve actually got to buy a ticket, or you’re not going to get it.”

She said she was going to call her mother to tell her the news and buy her friend dinner on Friday night.

“The USA Power Lotto is at its 42nd rollover, which is equal to the record number of rollovers,” The Lottery Office Chief Executive Officer Jaclyn Wood said.

“If the jackpot is not won on Sunday, it may well rise to an all-time record.”

How Australians can enter the US lottery

Through the Australian owned Lottery Office, Australians have the chance to play for jackpots that “dwarf anything traditionally seen in Australia”.

The Lottery Office’s government-licensed USA Power Lotto is exactly matched to the US Powerball.

Last year $3.1 billion was won by a single Californian ticket holder.

“We’re Australia’s ticket to the world’s largest official lotteries,” Wood said.

“When Australians purchase tickets in our lotteries, we purchase a matching ticket in the relevant overseas draw. That means our players are in with a real chance at prizes that are making headlines globally.”
