An armed man has been shot dead by police during a late night siege in Victoria.

Police said they were called to a home on Menzies Dr in Daisy Hill after reports of shots being fired about 3pm on Thursday.

“Officers attended and attempted to engage with the armed man before there was a siege for several hours,” they said.

Specialist police, including Critical Incident Response Team, Special Operations Group, and Dog Squad were called in to help.

The armed man began opening fire at police, before officers returned the fire just before 10pm.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

No one else was physically injured during the incident, police said.

“Homicide Squad detectives will now investigate the matter with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as is standard procedure for a fatal police shooting,” they said.

Investigations are ongoing.
