After early morning Anzac Day commemorations wrapped up, many Aussies headed to their next stop — the pub, with huge lines spilling out onto the streets and some unruly pubgoers jumping barricades.

Massive queues have been spotted outside venues in Sydney from as early as 8.45am as locals prepared to raise a toast to fallen soldiers, veterans and serving defence personnel, play a game of two-up and watch the footy.

But not all were respectful, with video footage showing patrons jumping barricades to skip queues after lengthy waits at one pub.

Before Anzac Day, Bondi Lines, an Instagram page dedicated to keeping locals updated on queues for venues, predicted the busiest Sydney pubs would be Clovelly Hotel, Royal Hotel Paddington, The Vic on the Park in Marrickville, Harbord Hotel in Freshwater, Glenmore Hotel in The Rocks, and Sackville Hotel in Rozelle.

And they were right, posting an early video showing a huge line all the way down the street at the Clovelly by 8.45am, with the pub set to open at 9am, with the caption “Anzac Day lines begin”.

At 12pm, dedicated pubgoers were still waiting, with a two-hour-plus line at The Clock in Surry Hills, a three-hour-plus line at the Bellevue in Paddington and long lines also seen at Sackville Hotel, Bondi Lines posted.

Vic on the Park was also so busy and police had to stop letting people line up. The Royal Hotel Paddington had reached capacity by about 10am.

Meanwhile, patience wore off at the Bellevue, which opened doors at 10am, with footage showing unruly patrons jumping barricades to get into the pub.

“When you’ve waited 3 hours at the Bellevue and can’t handle the last 15 mins,” Bondi Lines wrote, describing the Bellevue as having “the most cooked line since 9am”.

“Note – security are on it. This will not work.”

By 12.30pm, Harbord Hotel also had an hour-plus line to get in.

But not everyone was willing to line up, with others viewing the footage on Instagram surprised at the extremes people were going to for a “pub beer”.

“People really gonna stand in a line for 3 hours just to get into a pub, embarrassing,” one viewer wrote.

“I don’t get why you’d be that desperate for a pub beer today,” said another.

While another viewer had a crack at the pub tradition, “May the men who died protecting this country feel pride in these people who line up to drink”.

What is two-up?

But many just want to pay their respects by playing a game of two-up.

A lot of the pubs are hosting the popular gambling game, usually illegal to play for most of the year. The traditional Aussie game, involves a designated “spinner” throwing two coins into the air. Players then bet on whether the coins will both fall with heads (obverse) up, both with tails (reverse) up, or one of each (known as “odds”).

The game is traditionally played in pubs and clubs throughout Australia on Anzac Day, in part to mark a shared experience with the diggers.

While no permit is required to host two-up, venues must ensure the coin-tossing contest is conducted in line with its traditional format.

Earlier in the week, Liquor and Gaming NSW warned venues to prepare for an influx in patrons.

Acting executive director of regulatory operations Gabbie Gallagher said inspectors would be active across metropolitan and regional NSW on April 25 to ensure compliance with liquor and gaming laws.

“Anzac Day is a time when Australians come together, and as this year it marks the start of a long weekend, we expect venues to see an increase in patron numbers,” she said.

“Pubs and clubs must be vigilant in managing risks linked to the service of alcohol, intoxication, increased crowd numbers and gambling disputes.

“Our inspectors will be out across the state to check that venues are serving alcohol responsibly and meeting their obligations under NSW liquor and gaming laws.”
