How much does laundry cost at a five-star hotel? Traveller furious over ‘wild’ detail on receipt

‘I’m so upset I could cry.’

A traveller who treated himself to a luxury stay at a five-star hotel has detailed his shock after he was charged a “wild” fee for a laundry service.

Kenneth, from the US, dropped off his dirty clothes at his hotel concierge to get them professionally washed, ironed and folded.

Eight hours later, he was greeted with the “nicest laundry” he’s ever had done in his life.

But things quickly took a turn for the worse when a detail on his receipt left him on the verge of tears.

“I’m staying in a five-star hotel for my first time in my entire life,” Kenneth said in his now-viral video.

“I thought it’d be cool to see what it was like to be a rich person. However, as of this morning, I’m really regretting my decision.

“We fly out today and nobody wants to travel with dirty laundry so I looked for some local laundromats near me and of course there were none nearby.

“So I was like, all right , I’m just going to bite the bullet, we’re going to send it downstairs and have the hotel clean it.”

Before dropping off his laundry, Kenneth said he was happy to pay between $A45 to $A60.

“I’ll pay whatever the charges because it’s a five-star hotel, you know people like to spend their money just because they have it,” he explained.

He returned to his room to find his clean laundry neatly folded in a pile.

“I was like, ‘Wow this is the nicest laundry I’ve ever had done in my entire life’,” he said.

“It’s actually the only laundry I’ve ever had done. They even wrapped it in bows, they took my T-shirts and pressed them and put wax paper in them.

“And then I even got a card, I was like, ‘Wow this is amazing’.”

However, Kenneth quickly realised it wasn’t a “Thank You” card.

“It’s a bill for $US240 ($A370),” he said in disbelief.

“$US240 for laundry. I don’t want to be rich. Who wants to pay this kind of price? That’s insane.

“I’m so upset like I could literally cry right now. RIP to my bank account. $US240 for some laundry is wild.”

Sharing his regret, Kenneth confirmed: “I will no longer be staying in five-star hotels to see what’s it like ever again.”

His video has been viewed more than 600,000 times — with many weighing in on his fee.

“At that price I would just throw my old clothes away and buy new ones,” one joked.

Another agreed, saying: “Same. Damn my clothes altogether are not more than $A370.”

One wrote: “Ouch!! But that’s some fancy laundry right there.”

Another joked: “Thank you for experiencing this so I don’t have to.”

One suggested: “This is the equivalent of ordering food and then being shocked when the bill arrives.”

Meanwhile, many pointed out the expensive bill could have been avoided if he had checked the laundry’s price list, which is available in every hotel room.

“I’m confused. The pricing for EACH item is listed on a sheet — in the wardrobe area — in the room? How did you not know this?” one said.

Another suggested: “But there is a sheet with prices and they always ask you to sign it before taking the laundry!”

While one added: “Usually there is a price list attached to the laundry bag. It’s a five-star hotel, what did you expect?”
