Who doesn’t love a good, crunchy hot chip?
The experts at consumer advocacy group CHOICE have spilled the secret on to the best way to make them at home.
Home economist Fiona Mair put two budget-friendly air fryers to the test, to find which brand cooked the best chips.

One gadget performed so well, it was found to be better than a standard oven — and you may be surprised to learn which one.
The consumer expert baked a batch of McCain Superfries Straight Cut frozen chip in the Kmart Anko 3 in 1 Airfryer Oven ($119), Russel Hobbs SatisFry 8L air fryer ($200) and a standard oven.
Kmart’s model came out on top, with the “most golden, crunchy results”, proving you don’t need to fork out hundreds of dollars on expensive brands.
“When it came to the crunch, the clear winner out of this trio is... the Kmart Anko 3 in 1 oven air fryer,” Mair said, adding the chips were “evenly golden, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside”.
The Kmart air fryer scored 85 per cent on its chip cooking performance.
“The reason these chips are the best out of these three is likely due to the rotating basket,” she said.
“Rather than manually shaking or tossing the chips like you have to do in a standard air fryer or oven, the rotating basket does it for you, ensuring uniform cooking and even goldenness.”
The regular kitchen oven came second.
“Although they’re fairly evenly cooked, they’re not quite as golden as the Kmart air fryer chips, and they took longer to get there (bad news if you have a chip craving that needs sorting out fast),” Mair said.
She explained how oven-baked chips took more than half-an-hour to cook — compared with the 18 minutes in Kmart’s model, with no preheating required.
Russel Hobbs’ air fryer landed in third place.
Mair noticed the chips were “slightly unevenly brown” — “dark golden brown in some places and paler in others”.
The model was given a 75 per cent score in the review.
The results from CHOICE’s hot chip test were shared in a Facebook post, declaring Kmart the winner.
“I can verify this. I hated air fryers until I purchased the Kmart 3 in 1 and I have never looked back,” said one commenter.
“Love this,” said another.
