Australians are “freaking out” after only just discovering how cashews grow.

Jackson Jansen, from the Gold Coast, appeared shocked when he learned that cashews are seeds that grow on the outside of a type of apple.

“Where the f*** do cashews come up?” the young man said in a now-viral video.

“That’s not f***ing real,” Jackson said in disbelief.

“What the f*** is that? You’re telling me this grows in a tree, pushes out this f****** nut and it makes cashews?

“This is not real … I feel like I’ve been lied to my whole life.”

Another suggested: “I don’t think I like cashews anymore.”

One asked: “Are you joking?!”

While another added: “I can’t believe I made it to 23 without knowing.”

Meanwhile, one said: “I think it’s so crazy bizarre that people don’t know all this.”

Another added: “I’m from Brazil, I’m actually shocked people don’t know this! Lol and it’s my favourite fruit!”

One revealed: “Wait until you learn the cashew shell is toxic and they have to steam them because you can’t actually eat them raw.”

While another pointed out: “Why do you think they are so expensive?”

A cashew is botanically classified as a seed that grows on an apple of exotic cashew trees, native to Brazil and South-East Asia.

The process of getting the cashews from farms to supermarkets is quite labour intensive.

The apples are usually picked from the tree branch — with the seed and its hard kidney-shaped shells — still attached.

You only get one cashew per apple and their thick shells are said to contain a toxic substance that can cause skin irritation if not removed correctly.

Once picked, the shells are typically roasted over a fire or boiled to remove any harmful oils or acids.

Workers are still required to wear protective gloves at all times when extracting cashews from their outer shells.

The edible cashews are then thoroughly washed, cleaned and placed into an oven to ensure there are no traces of oils.

So can you eat the apple it grows on? You can eat it but it has a strange bitter taste so it’s not ideal for snacking.
