“I love my partner, Ben; we’ve been together six years, and we were best friends for ten years before that in high school,” the woman explained.

While she and her partner are not engaged, she said that they had “essentially planned their wedding and have been gearing up to a buy a house”.

The couple put in an offer on a house they loved and they were very excited.

All that was left was for the couple to be financially approved.

However, the couple didn’t get financial approval and the woman was left in shock.

“We had done well with savings and transparently I’d been given a substantial deposit from the bank of Mum and Dad, as well as earning $230,000 as a household per year.”

“But when I found out why we didn’t get approved, I was truly devastated,” she said.

The woman explained that whilst her partner isn’t great with his money, she didn’t realise how dire his situation was.

She then discovered the true extent of his financial woes which included defaults on his credit account, secret Afterpay accounts and his engagement ring savings account drained on frivolous purchases.

What confused the woman even more was that her partner earns more than she does and has no HECS debt.

“I just assumed things he was buying was because he had more disposable income,” she said.

“But knowing now we are in no position to buy, when I thought we might be settling on a place in two to three months, is completely devastating.”

She explained that her partner doesn’t know that she knows but that she has downloaded the documents he uploaded to their home loan application.

“I’ve taken a look at his bank statements and credit file and I’m well and truly across how dire his financial situation is but he has no idea I am across the level of it that I am,” she said.

The woman was searching for answers and felt she was in an incredibly difficult predicament, asking the internet for advice.

“How do I approach this with him when he’s lied to me about it, been this dishonest for so long?”

“He’s a beautiful person but he’s clearly struggling with managing money and given money is the major reason for divorce.”

“Am I a fool to marry someone with such a reckless approach to their finances, I’m finding it stressful, and we don’t even have a mortgage and kids?”

“What could the future hold, do I stay, or do I go?”

The video garnered more than 40,000 views and people in the comments were divided.

“Run, run and run,” said one.

“Run with your life Sis,” said a second.

“Get out, if he’s lying about this, what else is he lying about? My ex-husband was bad with money then led to a few years leading a double life with his colleague,” added a third.

However, others urged the woman to talk to her partner about it first.

“Talk to him. As someone who has made the mistake of not giving people a chance to change and grow, talk to him,” said one.

“Yes and no. Financial counselling and a little maturing will help him, would recommend the counselling before marriage,” added another.

“I think this is something you can talk out if he’s willing to do the work to do better,” said a third.
