The Voice contestant Ally Friendship has known since she was a teenager that she has two very different passions — singing and speaking to the spiritual world.

And while the two jobs seem worlds apart, the 38-year-old from Sydney believes both help her connect with people.

Friendship, whose blind audition aired on Sunday, was just 14 when she landed her first paid singing gig, doing back-up vocals for her older sister.

“Growing up, my sister was really into music,” Friendship told www.20304050.best.

“We used to put on concerts in the lounge room for our mum, dad and grandparents.”

Despite never having music lessons, Friendship reveals singing ran in the family and it was something they had grown up doing.

But alongside her passion for music, The Voice hopeful reveals she discovered another rare gift as a child.

“My grandfather passed away from cancer when I was 12 and the family decided to have a viewing,” Friendship explained.

“It was at the viewing that I turned to my mum and said ‘That’s what I’m going to do when I’m older.’”

Friendship explains after seeing the mortician — the person who manages all aspects of funeral arrangements for the deceased and their families, including preparing the body — during her grandfather’s funeral at 17, she was inspired to work with the dead.

Even when a careers advisor at school advised her against her chosen path — calling it “weird and gross” — she forged ahead.

Friendship reveals she approached some funeral homes herself before landing a job at a parlour in Taree, NSW.

“To this day, I don’t know what it was about it — I think looking at my grandfather and seeing him at peace, I just wanted to give that to other families,” Friendship said.

“From an early age I knew that, alongside music, is what I wanted to do, and I’ve been doing those two things pretty much my whole life.”

“From an early age, I’ve felt a connection to spirits and that was perhaps the reason I felt super easy around deceased people.

“There was never any fear attached to it.

“The world is a pretty crazy place these days and I always felt safe there.”

That connection with the spirit world is something Friendship says developed as she got older.

As a mortician, she’s seen how short life can be and believes in seizing opportunities when they arise, which is why she was inspired to audition for Channel 7’s Logie-winning show The Voice.

“I love music, it’s what I want to do, so I decided to give it a crack,” Friendship said.

Speaking about the show, the rock singer says she’s loved being able to share the experience with the other contestants and being able to perform on TV.

The Voice is on 7.30pm on Monday and Tuesday and 7pm Sunday on Seven and 7plus.
