Australians secured seven nominations this year, including first-time nominee Guy Pearce for Best Supporting Actor in The Brutalist. The Holocaust survivor drama is one of the frontrunners for Best Picture and has been nominated for a total of nine awards.

Elsewhere, Oscar winner Adam Elliot is up for Best Animated Feature Film award, alongside Liz Kearney. Elliot won Best Animated Short Film for Harvie Krumpet back in 2004.

Cinematographer Greig Fraser’s work on Dune: Part Two has been recognised by the Academy, while producer Maya Gnyp scored a nomination for documentary short film with I Am Ready, Warden.

On the technical front, Australians had a hand in Better Man, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Alien: Romulus, all of which are nominated in the visual effects category.

Conan O’Brien is set to host the Oscars for the first time, with presenters set to include Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jnr, Whoopi Goldberg, Harrison Ford, Samuel L Jackson and Selena Gomez.

The 2025 telecast will not include live performances of the five nominations for Best Original Song, although Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will perform a medley of tunes from the hit musical. Queen Latifah will pay tribute to the legendary music producer Quincy Jones, who died in November, while Doja Cat, Raye and Lisa will also take to the stage.

The ceremony is also likely to include hastily-conceived tributes to two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman, who was found dead last week at the age of 95. Hackman won Best Actor in 1971 for The French Connection, and Best Supporting Actor in 1992 for Unforgiven, and was nominated on a further three occasions.
