Dr Chris Brown has told of his “biggest surprise” after making an “unpleasant” discovery about his beloved pet dog.

Last week, the Channel 7 star took to Instagram to reveal how he had found two paralysis ticks on his pup Buzzy, leading him to issue an “official warning” that “tick season is here”.

On Friday, Chris sat down with Sunrise hosts Matt Shirvington and Monique Wright to explain more about his worry.

“I think the biggest surprise is how early this year the ticks have come around,” the star said.

“And it’s because when you get the flush of warmer weather we often get in early August, a bit of rain, they are the triggers and signals that the ticks are waiting for.

“And then they appear, and if your dog is unlucky enough to walk through that coastal bushland and pick them up then you can have a situation I did with Buzzy and find them.”

He went on to clarify that Buzzy was ‘ok” and he wasn’t in the studio because he had “other appointments” with his dog walker.

Chris told the hosts he didn’t really have a preferred method of tick prevention.

“They are all quite effective. Obviously you’ve got your monthly or three monthly.

“The key is find one that works for you and you’re going to be able to use regularly.

“Some people, I think, find it hard to remember to use it every three months so the monthly, weirdly, is often a little bit easier to use.

“But put it in your calendar, set a reminder and really get on that from now on.”

Chris went on to explain how the tick season runs from August to around February and March.

“Over the winter months, up until August, you generally don’t have the challenges,” he said.

“But you’ve got to make sure you’re on the ball when they do come around because often in this early part of the season, I find, they’re more venomous, if you like.

“The toxin in the ticks is stronger so it tends to knock the dogs and cats around a little bit more. You’ve got to be on to those early signs and on to the prevention.

“Prevention is the critical part but also check them over. Most ticks will tend to attach on the front legs forward.”

Chris advised using “tickle fingers” to check your pet and “get through the fur”.

In his previous Instagram post, he revealed how the ticks he’d found on his dog were only “about two days old” and that because he’d just started prevention, “they were dead”.

The Channel 7 presenter said ticks feel like “a small skin lump”.

“But unlike a lump, they have legs. In good light, you’ll see they’re grey in colour and attached by their mouth.”
