A beloved garden bar in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD will close its doors after 14 years, leaving hundreds of locals devastated.

Roxie’s announced the sad news on Monday, with owner Tom Skipper saying the closure comes after a developer purchased the block of land that his venue operated on.

“When Singaporean developer Wee Hur purchased our block, we knew change was coming,” Mr Skipper’s statement read.

“While the cranker has been saved thanks to a landmark agreement, the reality of the redevelopment means that Roxie’s must make way for a new student accommodation tower.”

Reflecting on Roxie’s journey, Mr Skipper said it was more than just a bar for so many people.

“It’s been a home, a playground and a place where strangers became friends.

“From Little Miss Mexico to Crabshack and Superfish it’s been one hell of a ride.

“Each iteration carving its place in Adelaide’s nightlife

“What started as an experiment became a legacy an it wouldn’t have been possible without you — the people it made it what it was.”

Mr Skipper confirmed the venue’s last day will be May 25 but he said he wants customers to help send Roxie’s off with good drinks, great music and “a party that won’t be forgotten”.

Hundreds of locals reacted to the announcement on Facebook, with many saying they will miss the iconic venue.

“I am so sad this place is going. Lovely atmosphere, great pizzas. I have great memories of going there with my dad,” one person said.

Another commented: “What an amazing ride! Many a memories made with friends over the years on this site! All the best!”

Others expressed frustration that another venue was being closed due to developers.

“We really need a revolution of some sort to stop all these cretinous developers everywhere,” one said.

“Really (sucks) they are destroying such a lovely place with heritage,” another added.
