When we first moved into our tiny one bedroom flat in Bondi seven years ago the owner of the apartment had graciously left behind a few key pieces of furniture.

There was a worn and fairly beaten down brown leather couch, a washing machine and dryer downstairs, a couple of rattan baskets — which I put to good use storing clothes — and a fridge.

It was an LG number from years gone by, a stock standard and sturdy make that has survived umpteenth years in our former landlord’s care only to be uprooted and placed into our new kitchen after we bought a house last year.

Needless to say this fridge has been on a journey, and despite still being in perfect working condition, the older look of it was giving me pause for thought.

After all, these appliances have come a long way in the past decade.

Knowing how good this LG-branded fridge has been to us it was a no-brainer to stick with the brand again for an upgraded model but we also had to source an option that would fit through our front door — a measly 73cm wide — and squeeze into a pre-ordained space in the kitchen.

Of course, this was no issue for LG and the 340L Bottom Mount Fridge with an “Instaview” fit the brief perfectly.

What is the Bottom Mount Fridge Instaview all about?

Firstly, a bottom mount fridge is simply one that has its freezer in the bottom half section, rather than the top, which is more typical.

Our priority has always been to amplify fridge space over freezer space because we don’t meal prep or have a young child, so the only products that exist in our freezer are green peas, ice packs and on the odd occasion, ice cream.

With this in mind we don’t need our freezer at eye level and are happy to have it closer to the floor where it will be used much less.

The “Instaview” portion of the name pertains to its ability to show you the contents of the fridge without opening the door.

All you need to do is give the screen a firm knock and an LED light will show you what’s in the door and main compartment of the fridge itself, which is perfect for when you’re doing your food shopping and need to write down a list of ingredients.

How does delivery work?

Our new place is at the top of three flights of stairs; no mean feat for fridge deliverers.

But this was a non-issue for the DHL-organised employees who traipsed up the carpeted staircase with ease, unboxing the fridge in our stairwell before switching it out for our old fridge.

They were only too happy to take our older model fridge, which although not broken was certainly due an upgrade.

The Bottom Mount Fridge Instaview has rear wheels on it so it’s easy to manoeuvre into place and simply attaches by power cord to a plug.

Despite the fact the fridge has an automatic ice dispenser, this is manually filled up from inside the fridge so you don’t need to plumb the device when it arrives.

This is a win-win for simplicity. It was cold and ready to go in just two hours.

What are your favourite features of the fridge?

The 340L Bottom Mount Fridge with an “Instaview” soars above the competition in terms of what it can fit inside versus how large it actually is.

There are two separate drawers for vegetables, fruit, meat and fish so you can separate all of your products the way you see fit and switch between a tab to ensure you’re getting the appropriate freshness for each style of product.

The shelves on the door are double the size of our previous fridge so you can actually fit two jars one in front of the other.

There is a special compartment for eggs, which is a nice touch, and I like that the automatic ice dispenser is fairly tucked away with the ability to remove it entirely from the freezer should you like to use that space for something else.

The only thing I do miss about our old fridge is that it had a smaller drawer for dairy products, which this one doesn’t, but it’s a small price to pay for double the amount of space for fresh food in the crisper.

It comes with a 10 year parts warranty so you can rest assured this product is built to last.

For those that love to hook up your devices to the latest tech, this fridge can be added to the LG ThinQ app so you can remotely adjust its temperature settings en route home from the supermarket.

And while you’re loading the fridge back up with food, or cleaning it, you can momentarily pause the cooling function so it doesn’t lose precious energy.

Where can you buy it?

The 340L Bottom Mount Fridge Instaview can be purchased on LG’s website for $1,599 and a range of retailers like JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman.
