Most portable 4K projector: LG CineBeam Q is the ultimate movie night-making device

With just about every device we know of becoming smaller and more portable, the humble TV has taken its sweet time to miniaturise.

Sure, I could watch my favourite shows and catch up on My Kitchen Rules on my phone but it’s just not a large enough device to happily sit in front of for long periods of time. Ditto my laptop.

So I’ve been looking at projectors as a way of moving the movie to where I am or where I want to go, easily projecting what I want to watch on the closest wall or sheet held aloft between two trees (a girl can dream).

There are increasing numbers of projectors on offer, but plenty I’ve tried have given off a fairly grainy picture or the scope of the picture isn’t very wide, so I just about jumped out of my skin when I saw what LG’s CineBeam Q could do.

This $2499 box of goodness comes with 4K worth of stunning detail so it doesn’t look like you’re looking at a wall at all — it looks like any other TV.

It comes with a remote for easy moveability and the set-up takes just minutes once you connect to WiFi.

The projector itself is incredibly light so you can move it around with ease and a metal prong allows you to adjust exactly where you want the image to “throw” on the wall or apparatus in front of you.

It’s just as “smart” as a regular smart TV with access to all of your favourite streaming services, so you can watch the latest Netflix original AND 7Plus at the same time.

My favourite way to use the projector is actually while laying in bed.

I can project the show in front of me without having to install a TV in my room — leaving precious wall space for art, mirrors and wardrobes to lean up against.

It has built-in speakers, so you don’t even have to connect anything extra to it to enjoy powerful sound.

Customers who have shopped the projector have also praised its quality and ability to be visible even in moderate light.

“There are so many things I love about this projector! First of all, I love the minimalist design that it has, is extremely intuitive to use. The remote isn’t overly complicated, and I love that it has the shortcut for some of the apps built into it. The picture from the projector is so crisp and clean and it automatically adjusts to whatever size surface you’re projecting onto,” one review read on LG’s website.

“I’m not a tech-savvy person so I was little bit worried about setting it up but it was surprisingly easy! I just literally need to plug it in and that’s it,” said another.

A third added: “Having purchased a handful of projectors over the years I was hesitant in going for something so small but was a little tired of moving around big/bulky/loud projectors. I was prepared to swap image/sound quality for portability, but when I turned it on in my darkened lounge room against a white wall I was floored that the quality of the image was miles ahead of my much more expensive bulky projector.”

If you’re a little nervous about the price, don’t be. It might come as an investment piece but it’s one you’ll have for years to come — with ample tech built in to make it worth every penny.
