I made a huge mistake by deciding to dye my platinum blonde hair the darkest, inkiest brown I could find late last year and I’ve been living with the consequences of that decision ever since.

I think every faux blondie has a moment where they waver on their chosen hair colour and wonder whether it’s time to return to the glossy brunette of their youth.

Well I did that and while yes, it was glossy, it also had a smattering of grey hairs strewn between the layers that weren’t there five years ago when I first started dying it blonde.

The worry with lifting your hair after permanently dying it brunette is that it can be exceptionally hard — and potentially hair-loss-inducing — to bleach it within an inch of its life again.

It can also leave your locks looking really, really dry.

So when I heard about Wella’s Shinefinity range and the fact the in-salon product can help you achieve a colour glaze without any lift and zero damage I thought this sounded right up my alley.

I visited Que Colour salon in Sydney’s Darlinghurst to see owner Monique McMahon and talk all things Wella, glazes and proper aftercare for blonde-bleached hair.

If that salon name sounds familiar it’s probably because Que Colour’s videos have likely popped up on your For You page, complete with millions of views and hundreds of comments asking how Monique does her signature “butterfly haircut” and glossy glazes.

I’ve “liked” a good number of those videos myself and saved them for inspiration, so it was somewhat surreal to be sitting in her chair.

I presented Monique with my head of hair which had been soaked in sea water that morning courtesy of a before work swim and was looking bedraggled and grown out.

But this didn’t deter the Que colourist-in-chief who explained that a specific foiling technique, free painting and the holy grail Shinefinity would be just the ticket for a lived-in delicious bright blonde look.

Shinefinity combines balanced pH technology with a zero damage hint-of-a-tint to reveal your shiniest hair yet - and it can last up to six weeks, according to Wella.

The formulation doesn’t lift the hair and contains no ammonia, silicone or drying alcohols, which means you can use it on all hair types, including fine, fragile, coarse or dry hair.

I felt like I was only at the basin for a few minutes getting the treatment done because you don’t have to get a full shampoo and conditioner afterward, although Monique did add some conditioner post-treatment because my hair was drier than usual.

Looked glazed and shinier than I ever have before Monique than gave me a signature blowout using a round brush and hairdryer, adding her favourite luxury hair oil by Wella.

To say I was shocked at how blonde Monique had managed to get my hair in just a few hours was an understatement.

I walked out a completely different person and sauntered straight into the office Christmas party looking — and feeling — a million bucks.

I’ll be using Wella’s Invigo Blonde Recharge Shampoo and Conditioner (which are both currently on sale) to keep my blonde hair bright until my next appointment.

You can allow both the shampoo and conditioner to sit in your hair for just a few minutes in the shower to eliminate brassiness and promote shine.

So if you’re looking at your own hair and thinking it could do with a little shine I can’t recommend Shinefinity highly enough.

Get that glaze for summer, Christmas and the party season ahead.
