With just a few months to go until a milestone birthday in February, you’d never guess that TV makeover queen turned multi-million-dollar beauty CEO Trinny Woodall was about to turn 60.

This, Trinny says, is in no small part thanks to her dedicated approach to skincare that has seen her prioritise five key pillars since she was in her 20s.

“Every skin type, no matter whether it’s acne or inflammation-prone or has rosacea or psoriasis, can benefit from five things in particular: a really good cleanser, an exoliant, a vitamin C, a retinoid and SPF,” a radiating Trinny tells Best Picks from her hotel room at the Park Hyatt in Sydney.

“Even if you have problem skin and rosacea, these items can be used in moderation.

I’ve used all of them all my life.”

1. Double cleanse

The first thing Trinny says she religiously does with her own skin on a daily basis is double cleanse.

“I have double cleansed for the past 30 years,” Trinny says.

“First of all, I’ll use a balm cleanser like Be Your Best ($60) to take away all the dirt and makeup and SPF.

Then, I’ll go in with a gel-style cleanser like Better Off ($50) again because I want to really clean out the pore to enhance the efficacy of any product I use afterwards.”

Trinny says she gets “frustrated” with some cleansers that leave a “film on the skin” that make it hard for ingredients in other skincare products to penetrate deeply.

“You need to make sure you get off every ounce of cleanser each night, because otherwise that can act as a barrier for ingredients to go in,” she says.

2. Exfoliate for your skin type

Next up, Trinny says she will always exfoliate every single night - whether that’s with an AHA like Reveal Yourself ($72), a PHA like TipToe In ($65) or using a tool, like her new microneedling device, the Plump Up Microneedle ($84).

“I’ll do a PHA and a retinoid one night, the following night I’ll do an AHA and every third night, I’ll use my microneedle,” Trinny says.

“While I’ve done microneedling for 25 years, I have, like many people, done bad microneedling or done it too strong.

“In order to do it well, you need to go really gently to microscopically damage the skin. I will checkerboard cross hatch twice one way, and then twice the other way.

“It might be a scary idea for some that you want to damage the skin, but when done well, it can be really effective.”

Trinny says, however, that like all tools, you have to use a microneedle “religiously” every few days in order to see the benefits.

“It stimulates the skin, rebuilding collagen and elastin,” she says.

“I always only do it at night, and then follow with a peptide like Plump Up ($130) and a moisturiser like Bounce Back ($92) to lock in hydration.”

3. Add a retinoid and facial massage

Trinny has been using retinoids in some shape or form since she was in her 20s and struggled with cystic acne.

She confesses she has built up the strength of her skin to the level where it can tolerate some form of “retinol every night”.

“I also love using tools at night, whether that’s my Gua Sha to stimulate and drain my lymph nodes or Korean massage with my hands,” Trinny says.

“Your hands can do so much to reduce the puffiness in your face. But if you’re using a Gua Sha, you need to remember to drain any puffiness by pushing the tool downwards and flushing out the puffiness.

“It’s no good just pushing it to the edge of your face and not draining it.”

4. Always use vitamin C

In the morning, Trinny is religious about vitamin C - which she both applies topically via her Boost Up ($130) and which she takes as a supplement.

“I take 3000mg of vitamin C a day and I think it’s really helpful,” she says.

“It’s one of the best things you can do for your skin, not only in application, but taking it orally.”

5. Apply SPF

Finally, Trinny says a routine must have a good SPF, as without it, you are only enhancing any potential sun and environmental damage.

“Typically, the women I see in Australia are pretty good with their SPF - much better than in the UK and Ireland,” she says.

“I think that’s one of the reasons why the skin of many women in Australia is so good.”

Business lessons

Having worked in business for over three decades as the host of iconic TV show What Not to Wear and later the creator of her multi-million-dollar makeup and skincare line, as well as the author of her new book Fearless and podcast of the same name, Trinny says she will “never stop learning” about business.

“I always think you’ve never learned enough,” she says.

“For instance, over the years I’ve learned more about what I’m not good at than what I am good at.”

Trinny says she knows she isn’t good at letting people “have their thought in the room without winding the movie forward and thinking that’s not going to work”.

“I should actually just let them state why they want to do something without interrupting and steam-rolling through,” Trinny says.

“Half the time when I stop the thought it’s because I’m right and I want to move on to the next thing. But the other half, I’m probably wrong and maybe I need to go back and re-visit it.

“But because my brain is going elsewhere, I don’t give them enough time.

“I often think: if you’re a really good boss, is it better that you steamroll or is it better to let people listen and learn along the way?”

And as for that milestone birthday, Trinny has a walking holiday with 12 of her nearest and dearest planned in Bhutan:

“I think the holiday in Bhutan will be 12 of us; family including my daughter Lyla and about eight friends,” she says.

“The fewer the people, the bigger the experience, the better the memory.”
