I’m a hopeless card game player and can never sit still long enough to learn the rules in full.

Often, the cards come out after a big family dinner and by that stage I’m halfway off to bed.

But there is one game, best played outside, that I never want to stop playing once its started — and that is Finska.

Finska is an ancient wood-chucking game, the origins of which can be traced back to the ancient game of Kykka which hails from the birch wood forests of Finland.

And genuine sets of Finska stay true to their roots — all are made from select-grade birch wood or premium beech wood.

Since Finska dropped onto our Australian shores in 2009, the game has spread like wildfire, to the point where it is now becoming a household name.

It can be played on grass, gravel, sand, dirt, snow, mud, asphalt and concrete, whatever you’re surrounded by, and the aim is to collect 50 points by throwing a wooden log at other numbered wooden pins.

If you knock down one pin, you score the number on that pin.

If you knock down two or or more pins, it’s one point for each pin knocked down.

My partner and I were given a set for a recent birthday and we’ve happily been playing it at every opportunity.

“This game is seriously fun. Super easy to learn and great for adults as well as children,” one reviewer wrote on Amazon.

“It’s a bunch of pieces of wood, but it’s made well enough and it is fun to play. They are difficult to stand up on grass but I think this was made more for dirt,” said another.

“Because it’s all wood, and the carrying ‘box’ it comes with is also all wood, you can literally leave this out in a backyard somewhere and it should never really go bad. The scoring is pretty neat. It is fun even with grown ups. Great backyard toy.”
