I can’t claim that I’m a life-long homesteading extraordinaire who prioritises baking and polishing plates over all else but since buying a home earlier this year I have found a certain level of happiness in my kitchen.

It’s a large enough space that cooking has become enjoyable compared with my pint-sized one-person-in-one-person-out kitchen in a Bondi rental.

I have procured a baby pink KitchenAid Stand Mixer in recent years that has only served to enhance said enjoyment in the kitchen. Where it used to sit idly by the side, a gorgeous ornament but unused, I’ve now started incorporating it into not only my baking repertoire but also just general mixing and mincing for dinner.

But let’s not beat around the bush, KitchenAids range in price but your stock standard variety can retail for $749 and up, which means they’re out of reach for many Australians.

So when I had the opportunity to test Kogan’s 5L Stand Mixer, I took the brand up on its offer.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a Stand Mixer expert but I certainly know my way around the designer variety, so why not see if it stacks up?

Firstly, the black-coloured version I received is a cool $89.99. The white version is currently on sale for $49.99, an absolute steal.

So when it comes to price, Kogan has got KitchenAid beat 10 times over, but that’s to be expected — the immediate look and feel of the Kogan product is more budget.

It’s a lot lighter because of the materials used to make it (the majority of its outer shell is plastic) but it does come with the same four standard attachments that the KitchenAid does: A flat beater, balloon whisk, splash guard and dough hook.

I actually prefer that it’s easier to move around the kitchen, rather than the KitchenAid which feels pretty heavy to set down. It’s made to be seen though, so the majority of KitchenAid owners will have their Stand Mixer set out on the countertop already.

The Kogan Stand Mixer instead has anti-slip rubber feet to keep the mixer in place, protecting countertops and surfaces against scratches.

It also tilts back, just like a KitchenAid does, to allow the exchange of attachments and to retrieve the bowl from underneath with your mixed goods inside.

There is a slight difference in the number of speed settings, with Kogan having 12 separate options and KitchenAid having six, but I didn’t really notice whether that added or detracted from the use of it — I could still get the same outcome no matter how many speeds I went through.

Both are fairly easy to store in a standard sized pantry. They plug into a wall socket in the same way and have a similar sized bowl — Kogan’s is 5L and the KitchenAid I have is 4.7L.

I think the main differences that set KitchenAid apart from its competitors is the use of colour in its Stand Mixers and the additional purchase of various other attachments, including a pasta maker and metal food grinder for meat.

If you’re planning on using a Stand Mixer for the purpose of baking and you’re not looking for a whizz bang, can-do-everything-at-your-fingertips device then Kogan’s option is an easy win.
