I have only recently moved into a new home and, alongside this immense life change, have taken up following just about every homeware-loving/food-making influencer on Instagram.

The way these people can set a table is astounding. There are colourful plates with mismatched fruit prints on them, bowls shaped like cabbages, gold cutlery, funky glasses and napkins, and usually a deliciously homemade cake in the centre to top it all off.

But you don’t have to quit your full-time job and launch a new social media account to tablescape like the pros ... I’ve discovered it’s as simple as finding the right brands and choosing a few key pieces to make your dining room sing.

All good tablescaping starts with the single most essential product: The table itself.

Now while this is a highly personal decision, and depends on how much space you have, I opted for Mocka’s Eve 6 Seater Dining Table because it’s both modern and sturdy — nothing like the flatpack IKEA builds you can buy for about the same price.

Currently on sale for $679.99 — it usually retails for $849.99 — this exquisite table has a ’70s feel about it with a light timber setting that takes about 14 minutes to set up (I counted).

While many of Mocka’s furnishings are flatpack by design you can’t actually tell I was the tradesman who put it together — each piece requires just a couple of screws and washers to set it in place.

Same goes for the chairs. I chose the Avila Dining Chairs — which are priced at $299.99 for a set of two — and managed to piece together the legs to the base with ease.

Six chairs fit comfortably around the table although it’s worth keeping in mind that the two ends will have less leg space than the others.

It’s almost a shame to put a tablecloth over the top but you’re only going to “tablescape” when guests are around anyway and the Eve 6 Seater will shine alone on every other occasion.

I recommend having two full dining sets ready to go when you’ve got visitors coming over — a more casual and brightly coloured offering and a neutral, toned-down one.

While it might not be your first thought given the name, Pillow Talk actually offers a great range of homewares to suit and I used much of the brand’s Catania Stripe silhouette for my neutral tablescape.

The Catania Stripe Table Cloth ($54.95) is large enough to swathe over the six-seater Mocka table and lightly drape on my Ruggable rug below it and I picked up the matching Catania Stripe Napkins ($4.95 each) to match.

My Corelle Country Cottage Dinner set — which you can pick up at Spotlight — worked as plates on this occasion because the blue tied in together nicely.

To move slightly away from the ocean colour palette I brought in the Maya Scalloped Placemats from Pillow Talk — which are down to $7.50 each — and paired them with the Eden Tumblers ($19.95 for two).

So, it goes to show you don’t need to have a house full of In The Roundhouse to make a tablescape vision come to life, there are certainly ways for your table to look luxe for less.

But if you do love a brightly coloured setting, No. 22 Home is the place to pick up some favourites.

The Capri Collection is mind bogglingly beautiful with blue, green, yellow and pink dinner plates available for just $35 each. A set of four will set you back $139.

I like to mix and match them on the table so you’ve got a range of colours popping but if you’d like to stick to a theme there is the option for that, too. Who needs to travel to Europe when you’ve got your own living room?

To match this Italian look the $119 Gold Cutlery Set is a must-buy, with long stems reminiscent of decadent tea parties.

If you’re looking for smaller side bowls the Capri collection has you sorted there too, with four of them priced at $89.

I placed all of this crockery over a Queen-sized bed sheet from Dri-Glo, proving that you don’t actually even need to have proper tablecloths so long as you have linen in your cupboard.

So, if you’re planning a dinner party in the near future don’t fret about how you’re going to decorate — there are ample incredible designs from all of our favourite brands to help you out.
