Say goodbye to FOMO for your pets when you go on holiday, as Virgin Australia is launching its first-ever pet-friendly flights just in time for Christmas.

More than a year after unveiling its plan to allow pets in the cabin, Virgin Australia has revealed that it now has the permission to allow small animals on board.

Yes, that’s right. By Christmas, your (small) furry best friend will be allowed to travel with you, provided they are in a Virgin-approved carrier.

The Best Picks team’s top pick is the Kurgo Dog Carrier Backpack ($136.61; Amazon Australia), which comes in both grey and black and it suitable for dogs up to 11.3 kilograms.

The rucksack has all the features you want in a carrier, plenty of room, ventilation, and an interior pad that can be washed.

It also comes equipped with room for your laptop or iPad, an interior tether to keep your pup in place and a completely water and muckproof bottom that wards off even the dirtiest of airport floors.

Alternatively, if you have an even smaller pup who weighs up to 6.8kg, the Nomad Carrier ($139.98; Amazon Australia) is a fantastic option.

The Nomad Carrier has a couple of bonus features that elevate it to another level.

For instance, the carrying handles can be easily clasped at the top when not in use, so you can fully access the backpack straps.

The fabric at the front of the bag can also be rolled up and neatly stowed into a hidden pocket to reveal the breathable mesh window beneath it.
